“When you are finished changing, you are finished.”

-Benjamin Franklin

“The only constant in life is change.”

-Heraclitus

Over the last few years, much has changed in the world. From advances in medical sciences to the rise of AI in everyday life, the world is accelerating at an unprecedented rate. It’s an exciting time to be using technology. Solutions to problems are coming from new and unexpected areas, fueling innovation like never before.

Amidst today's rapid technological development, recent economic conditions have presented a unique set of challenges. Modern enterprises must find ways to do more with less if they want to take full advantage of this innovation and excel within our new global economic models.

With all this in mind, Red Hat is striving to help customers overcome their challenges, no matter the scope. We are engineering products to solve today’s business problems as well as preparing organizations for the future.

This philosophy lies at the heart of our newest Reference Architecture, bringing together Red Hat Openshift Container Platform 4.12 on Red Hat Openstack Platform 16.2.

By running Red Hat OpenShift on top of Red Hat OpenStack Platform, you’ll be able to:

  • Modernize workloads over time: Running virtualized and containerized applications side-by-side accelerates your journey to containerization. With OpenShift on Red Hat OpenStack Platform, you’re using the same secure multi-tenancy infrastructure for your traditional VMs and new containerized applications.
  • Build cloud-native skills and accelerate DevOps practices: Let your IT operations and development teams both work on a unified platform, collaborating on work that adds business value rather than spending time maintaining your infrastructure platforms.
  • Access proven expertise and support across both platforms: By offering deep integration and tested interoperability between both platforms and the support of  Red Hat Services and Support teams, you can focus on your customers rather than the IT that supports your code.

The latest release of the OpenShift on Red Hat OpenStack Platform Reference Architecture incorporates important changes from each of the products as well as real-world experiences from our customers and field teams who run previous versions of the solution. Read on for a few examples.

Storage

We’ve significantly updated the sections on storage to take better advantage of the built-in Red Hat Ceph Storage solution. We document how to use local storage for your OpenShift control plane and capitalize Ceph for your running workloads.  Through this flexibility, you’re utilizing the fastest and most resilient options for your entire container platform without compromising workload performance.

Networking

We’ve updated the networking section to use the OVN-Kubernetes Container Network Interface (CNI) plugin. This next-generation SDN solution for OpenShift networking is the default in OpenShift 4.12+. With the addition of OVN-Kubernetes in OpenShift and the existence of the OVN Modular Layer 2 (ML2) plugin in OpenStack, we are excited to offer a more precise integration between the networking layers, reducing complexity and ensuring more predictable outcomes.

Change brings possibility

This just scratches the surface of this powerful product integration. With Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform on Red Hat OpenStack Platform, you’ll gain the power of containers without compromising the flexibility of a world-class infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) solution. You’ll be able to experiment with modernizing your technology stack to accommodate market demands and rapid technological change without losing cycles trying to update the basics of your technology stack.

At Red Hat, we understand that while technology is key to your business success, people are its core.

With OpenShift on Red Hat OpenStack Platform, you’ll get a deeply integrated, well-tested, fully supported modernization platform that empowers your teams to focus, thrive, and excel with any change that comes their way.
