What inspired you to be a developer?
I have a Mechanical Engineering degree. I loved studying mechanical engineering in college. But nothing comes close to software engineering for applying ideas and creativity and seeing results in a much shorter time. Those practical aspects of software engineering attracts me most.
Why did you choose OpenShift as your hosting platform?
I picked OpenShift because it provided many different platforms and tools. I'm primarily a Java backend developer but I got my hands dirty on different technologies like NodeJS and PHP. I love the idea of using a single platform and being able to code in different languages.
What advantages does OpenShift give you that other platforms don't?
I certainly like to have control over most aspects of my application. OpenShift gives me that capability. I like the idea of cartridges and the fact that I can develop a custom cartridge. I also like the options available in the marketplace.
Tell us more about your application currently hosted on OpenShift:
- Name: Yalim Aytul's Painting Portfolio
- What does it do? This website shows my painting portfolio. It's a responsive website built on OpenShift with PHP and MySQL but there are many other technologies used for this website. It renders high quality images and provides a variety of subjects, techniques and painting mediums.
- What technologies were used to create your app? I used PHP and MySQL for my website. On the front end I used AngularJS and Zurb's Foundation framework. I actually have a page detailing the technologies used on my website, you can view it here.
- What motivated you to create this application and what problems does it solve? This is my paintings website. I have had this website since 1998. It has gone through many changes over the years. Eventually it has evolved into what it is today. The main driving forces behind those changes were always web technology. Since version 2.6 my web site is mobile friendly and responsive. Currently I'm working on adding a RESTful API to make it even more connectable with 3rd party applications and social applications. Since this website is showing my paintings, I can't really say it solves a business problem. On the other hand, it has functionality to render HD images and zooming capabilities. So it could easily provide an example for rendering art work over the internet and mobile phones.
