What inspired you to be developers?
We love technology and various things it has enabled people to do. Being a developer is a great way to experiment and learn about new technologies.
Why did you choose OpenShift as your hosting platform?
The main reason was the lack of time restriction on the starter tier. Since we run an open community project, we have to stay on the starter tier, OpenShift has the only starter tier which is capable of hosting a small open community-based project 24/7.
What advantages does OpenShift give you that other platforms don't?
We enjoy the granular access and control given by OpenShift if the user needs it. Most other platforms try to restrict or abstract out the underlying platform, but sometimes that's useful for debugging and tuning performance.
Tell us more about your application currently hosted on OpenShift:
- Name: We Build
- What does it do? We Build curates free and open events (in the field of technology, engineering and design) and open source projects in Singapore automatically. It's designed to give visiting travelers to Singapore and curious locals a summary of what's going on in the tech community in Singapore.
- What technologies were used to create your app? Nodejs
- What motivated you to create this application and what problems does it solve? The application was created to enable having a quick overview of the technology community in Singapore. For guests, new enthusiasts or even regular attendees, having a list of upcoming open/free tech meetups and top open source repositories from Singapore is valuable. The application helps people find events, and introduces them to new events they might not know about. It also highlights popular and well made local open source projects. This can serve as a benchmark as well as inspiration for everyone else. In all, WeBuild.sg was created to encourage open sharing of technology/engineering/design and to grow and strengthen the local community.
- If your application is Open Source, how can others contribute or get involved? They can look at the code, fork it, raise issues etc here: https://github.com/webuildsg/webuild
