Technology trends and technology debates frequently come and go, especially as new technologies emerge. While many of us have been focused on containers and Kubernetes, there has been a parallel track of people looking at the concept of "serverless" and/or "functions-as-a-service" (FaaS). Beyond some of the serverless services available on the public cloud, there are more than a half-dozen serverless implementations (open source projects) that run on top of Kubernetes. This has created the latest technology debate - should serverless/FaaS be based on containers or not?
This past week, the CNCF's Serverless Working Group came out with some statements of direction on serverless, so we thought it would be a good time to dig into their guidance, as well as some broader trends around serverless across the industry.
