The next generation of cellphone technology, 5G, promises yet faster speeds. Service providers, historically purchased specific hardware and software from specialized providers. The rise of open source allows service providers to use generic hardware and implement telecommunication solutions using software. This dramatically lowers their costs and levels the competitive playing field as service providers are no longer beholden to niche hardware or software vendor.
