This is a guest post written in collaboration with Victor (Shi) Chen (VMware).
Red Hat and VMware have been technology partners for years, jointly delivering scale, speed and agility to satisfy developer needs - all without compromising the security features and visibility required by IT operations. Now, Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 4.10 has recently been tested and validated on VMware Cloud Foundation 4.5. The reference architecture paper authored by VMware in collaboration with Red Hat can be found here.
The audience will be able to understand at a high level how the architecture of Red Hat® OpenShift® Container Platform interacts with VMware Cloud Foundation. VMware Cloud Foundation Manager provides lifecycle management, while vSAN provides reliable, high-performance, and flexible storage for Red Hat OpenShift. In addition, NSX Data Center offers a fine-grained, secure and high-performance virtual networking infrastructure to Red Hat OpenShift. vSphere DRS and vSphere HA also leverage efficient resource usage and high availability, which come together to provide the end user customer with a consolidated and highly scalable solution of running Red Hat® OpenShift® Container Platform with VMware Cloud Foundation.
By running Red Hat OpenShift on VMware Cloud Foundation, you get all the benefits of a modern private cloud based on the proven VMware Software-Defined Data Center architecture:
- A consistent and easily replicated approach to standardized infrastructure
- Advanced automation - which eliminates human error and accelerates admin productivity
- Cloud scalability and agility
- Integration with VMware: VMware NSX™
- Integration with VMware: vSAN™
Additionally the customer will be able to leverage the advantages of VMware vSphere® features, such as VMware vSphere Distributed Resource Scheduler™ (DRS), vSphere HA, and vSphere vMotion®.
At its core, VMware Cloud Foundation combines automation with a standardized and accessible approach to infrastructure, giving IT Operations the infrastructure agility necessary to support developers by providing infrastructure that can be leveraged easily and efficiently by developers. Red Hat® OpenShift® Container Platform offers automated installation, upgrades, and lifecycle management throughout the container stack, as well as the operating system, Kubernetes and cluster services and applications on the cloud.
