Wow! What an exciting week here at Red Hat Summit 2015! We've made OpenShift Enterprise 3 (OSE 3) GA after a lot of long hours, hard work, and contributions from the community and team members. If that wasn't enough, we also announced OpenShift Dedicated as another offering from our OpenShift Online team. In short, opportunity for partners to showcase their solutions and reach customers has never been greater. To demonstrate this, I wanted to take the time to highlight three partners in particular who have been working with us to make the platform even better by extending capabilities with their solutions. Let's look at how a developer could use OSE 3 with these partner offerings to deliver applications from concept to reality.
As with most projects, you start with an idea. You have seen this week how OSE 3 continues our work over the past several years in providing a top-notch developer experience allowing users to turn their ideas into applications. However, there are usually several iterations on the idea as it's developed, and this where a strong CI/CD solution is needed – a great choice for OpenShift users is Shippable. Shippable is a Docker-based platform for CI/CD that announced a beta of their seamless integration with OSE 3 for customers looking to have a native CI/CD experience within the platform. By integrating with the projects, service accounts, authentication mechanisms, and private registries of OSE 3, developers can take advantage of both platforms with no friction and minimize operations overhead. You can learn and see more about this integration at the Shippable Commons Briefing scheduled for July 9. With Shippable and OSE 3, developers can innovate and iterate on their projects faster than ever before.
Once you get your application all set and ready to go, and it is released into the wild -- you'll also want to ensure it's running at peak performance. This is where our friends at New Relic have done some interesting work. As an early member of the Red Hat Container Certification Program, New Relic is able to offer a trusted solution available for anyone using OpenShift. By providing the capability to monitor the performance of applications built with Java, Ruby, Node.js, Python, & PHP – New Relic is able to help you easily understand how well your application is performing on OSE 3. Once available, users will simply utilize certified images that are preconfigured and integrated with New Relic -- just build, deploy and monitor. It's not only developers that gain benefit from New Relic, but per this blog post, New Relic is currently running a beta of their monitoring support for Docker itself giving the operations team one more tool to supplement the existing built-in health monitoring available with OSE 3.
So now you have an application running in production, and it’s running well. Shippable is helping you make improvements easier, and New Relic is providing metrics on how it’s running. It would be great to meter the application to gain some insights into its cost. We can now turn to 6fusion. With 6fusion integrated with OSE 3, operations and development can gain utility metering of your applications and services to help understand consumption today, but also benchmark the application to understand how it is changing over time. Imagine your application is using several containers in OSE 3 spread across multiple nodes installed across multiple clouds – with 6fusion measuring and metering this environment can be normalized allowing you to have an apples-to-apples comparison of consumption costs. This is obviously just one of many scenarios that are possible with OpenShift and the partner ecosystem. One of the biggest advantages of OSE 3 is the access to an enormous ecosystem of technology and business providers and partners, many of whom are also active in the open source community and OpenShift Commons. There are partner solutions for IDEs, for configuration management, SDLC and so much more – even accredited solution integrators to help get this all up and running and certified cloud service providers ready to be trusted destinations for OpenShift outside of the datacenter. Yes, OSE 3 was obviously a huge announcement for Red Hat, but as we push forward, it is clear that it is a win for the entire partner ecosystem where the customer is the clear winner.
